Meet Callum, our apprentice service engineer…

It’s National Apprenticeship Week and to celebrate we want to introduce you to our apprentice, Callum Moriarty.

Callum joined Coventry Scale Company in February 2019 as an apprentice service engineer. In fact, it’s Callum’s one-year work anniversary next week, so let’s hear about what he’s been up to over the last 12 months, and what he thinks of his apprenticeship and life in the weighing industry.

What made you want to do an apprenticeship with a weighing scale company?

I knew I wanted to do an apprenticeship in mechanical and electrical engineering, so my college suggested I apply for one with Coventry Scale Company. A weighing scale company sounded really different, not something most apprentices do every day, so I jumped at the chance to work here. In today’s world almost everything has to be weighed before it’s sold or transported, so I knew there would be loads of opportunities to work with different industries.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love the variety, literally every day is different. One day I’ll be shadowing one of my colleagues to install load cells to weigh tanks, the next I’ll be back in the workshop helping to calibrate weigh pads for a company to weigh its vehicles on. I love the customer side too, getting out and about and meeting people. I think in one week recently I visited a racing car factory, a cream cake factory, and a zoo.

What’s the best thing you’ve learnt over the last 12 months?

I’ve learnt loads of new skills, but the thing I’ve enjoyed learning the most is finding weighing solutions for customers. Everyone needs something a little bit different and learning how to programme weighing equipment, so it meets the customer’s needs has been brilliant.

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve weighed while at Coventry Scale Company?

The most unusual thing I have weighed is probably an elephant.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship and if so, why?

Yes definitely. I’ve loved learning on the job as well as having the one day a week at college. Being able to learn in a work environment is great. I can put everything I learn at college into practice and earn money at the same time. I’ve learnt so much from the team at Coventry Scale Company, they are all really supportive and it’s a great place to work.
